Summer Programs
The Cushman Middle School Summer School
The Cushman Middle School offers an intensive summer academic program for upcoming 7th and 8th grade students. Classes vary from remediation/review to classes for credit.
Classes offered:
- General Math: The purpose of this course is to enable students to develop the mathematical skills needed to understand higher level mathematical concepts. Students will receive small group instruction to improve their mathematical skills using various assessments, word problems, and basic math concepts. The course will include, but not be limited to, the following: word problems, problem solving, estimation, vocabulary, calculator basics, critical thinking, problem solving, test taking skills and strategies. (General Math & Pre-Algebra concepts and skills will be covered based on student readiness) (6 week program)
- Reading Comprehension/Writing: The purpose of this course is to provide instruction that enables students to develop and strengthen reading skills. Students will receive small group instruction to enhance reading, comprehension, and writing skills using various assessments, reading materials, writing prompts, and vocabulary. The course will include, but not be limited to, the following: reading for meaning, reading with written response, critical thinking, problem solving, test taking skills and strategies. (6 week program)
- MS Math 3: This course is designed to provide students with the foundation needed to build pre-algebra concepts. Students will leave this course with a solid understanding of all operations with rational numbers. Students explore geometric and measurement concepts, work with formulas and solve real world word problems. To receive academic credit, the student must earn a B or higher for his or her final average in this course. (7 week program)
- Pre-Algebra: The concepts presented serve as the springboard success in Algebra. Students will solidify operations with rational numbers and solving algebraic equations and inequalities. Students receive a more in-depth study of geometry and measurement. They solve and graph linear and quadratic equations and will continue to analyze data through statistics and probability. To receive academic credit, the student must earn a B or higher for his or her final average in this course. (7 week program)
- Algebra 1: This course builds algebra skills which will provide the foundation for future courses in mathematics. It includes the study of real numbers and expressions, operations with real numbers and problem solving. Students will learn the mechanics of solving equations and inequalities and apply them to word problems. Students explore polynomials, factoring, functions and graph and radicals and rational expressions. To receive academic credit, the student must earn a B or higher for his or her final average in this course. (7 week program)
