While we’ve made some campus improvements, and certainly updated our in-classroom technology, in the more than eight decades since the inception of The Cushman School one thing that hasn’t changed is the understanding that character development comes first.
Dr. Laura Cushman believed that a child who acts responsibly, is courteous, and demonstrates industrious behavior will achieve his or her personal academic best. These endeavors—industry, courtesy, responsibility, and scholarship—serve as the pillars of our curriculum, and of our school.
From even the youngest age, our students are taught to incorporate the practice of these endeavors into their daily life. And as they move into grades four through six, students are rewarded for demonstrating The Four Endeavors in the classroom by the Honor Card system, a monthly evaluation in which teachers indicate how successfully a student demonstrated industrious, courteous, responsible, and scholarly behavior. Through this evaluation, a student can earn the right to become a member of The Cushman School Student Council.
We know that one of the best ways to teach is through example. Needless to say, Cushman teachers prioritize the modeling and implementation of these values in their own behavior. Trustworthiness, compassion, respect, responsibility, integrity, industry, loyalty, and cooperation, are virtues that can be seen practiced by staff, faculty, and administration on a daily basis.
Take a walk around campus on any given day and you’re sure to find smiling children. You’re even more likely to see these children learning, working, or playing together. Why are Cushman kids so happy? We like to think that what you’re witnessing is just Dr. Cushman’s Endeavors—and The Cushman Spirit—in action.
