Primary School Curriculum

Mission Statement for Early Childhood Program

The mission of the Primary School is to develop happy, confident and creative thinkers who recognize their unique abilities and personal potential through meaningful play, developmentally appropriate and multisensory learning experiences, and a tradition of strong character development.

The Cushman School’s Early Childhood Program provides an environment where childhood is preserved. Educational experiences are designed with each student in mind, giving them opportunities to learn through play and exploration, while the teacher acts as a guide to expand on concepts and provide new provocations for learning. The needs of the whole child, cognitively, physically and emotionally, are nurtured for optimal growth and development.

Our Curriculum

The hands-on and individualized approach to learning that we take at Cushman allows our Primary School students the ability to develop math, language, science, and social studies skills through activities designed with creative problem solving, intellectual curiosity, and emotional growth in mind. Our educators seek to provide Cushman students with as many opportunities to explore their environment as possible—something that we believe is essential to their development as individuals.

Primary education is the gateway to the rest of a child’s life. And while we provide them with a strong foundation academically, we also believe that teaching our students to put character first on a daily basis is the real key to helping them become strong and successful people. That’s why “feeling with your heart,” “paying attention to others’ needs,” and “being responsible at school and home” are just some of the phrases you might overhear in the Primary School.

The Cushman approach to primary education is one that provides students with the space and resources to be compassionate and collaborative learners. By ensuring that our curriculum continues to be informed by the latest educational practice and theory, while at the same time staying deeply rooted in Dr. Laura Cushman’s philosophy, we have been successful for nearly a century in helping build good people—ones who value the virtues of industry and perseverance, courtesy, empathy and compassion, and responsibility for oneself, one’s family, and one’s community.
