Director of Athletics
Coach Pablo Gentile is the Director of Athletics and boys soccer coach at The Cushman School. He has been part of the Cushman family since 2001. Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Pablo moved to Dallas, Texas, at the age of nine. He played soccer at Newman Smith High School, earning All-District and All-Region honors. After playing at Richland College for two years, Coach Gentile transferred to Florida International University. His FIU team was ranked as high as number one in the nation and was one of the top four seeds in the NCAA tournament. After earning his bachelor’s degree in physical education, Coach Gentile played for the Miami Breakers in the Premier Development League (PDL). He was named “Best 11” and invited to the Umbro-Select Major League Soccer Combine in 2000. Pablo was selected in the 5th round of the MLS Superdraft by the Miami Fusion. After the Fusion, he went on to play for the Syracuse Salty Dogs of the A-League and won a national championship with Uruguay Soccer Club. Pablo coached Chaminade-Madonna Prep School to the first two district titles in the school’s history and consecutive regional semifinal appearances. He currently coaches club soccer for Plantation FC. He holds a National “B” License from U.S. Soccer and a Master’s degree in Elementary Education from Barry University.
Middle School Girls Soccer, CAD Soccer
Coach Christina Balseiro has been a part of the Cushman family since 1988. She always loved playing sports. She grew up playing soccer, softball, basketball and tennis. After graduating from Cushman, Coach Balseiro attended St. Thomas Aquinas High School in Ft. Lauderdale. There, she was on the cross-country team as well as the basketball team. St. Thomas won the State Championship in Cross Country the two years she participated. They were also ranked second in the state while she played basketball. Coach Balseiro has played soccer since age five and played club soccer throughout her high school years. While studying at UCF, Coach Balseiro played in the intramural soccer program. She is currently the Head of the girls Middle School soccer team, which she has coached for 9 years. She is also a coach in Cushman’s CAD program, as well as the after school soccer club. Coach Balseiro continues to motivate students to become involved in after school sports and finds it rewarding when student athletes work hard and improve their athletic skills.
Assistant Athletic Director, Head Coach: Boys Soccer
Coach Pedro Hernandez has been part of The Cushman School since 2004. He grew up playing pee wee football for K-Land in Miami. In middle school, he went on to play football, soccer and lacrosse. He was captain of his football and lacrosse teams while playing for Trinity Episcopal School, which later became Palmer Trinity. While at Palmer Trinity, playing the weak side line backer position on defense and special teams, his football team went on to win districts in the 3A division during his 11th grade year. That same year, while playing defense, face-off man and string man in lacrosse, the team went on to win the State Finals. For six years, Coach H also played the sweeper position in soccer. While living in St. Louis, Pedro played in various club soccer leagues. Sports has always been an important part of Coach H's life, which has led to his passion for coaching. About six years ago, Coach H was the co-founder and Vice President of South Miami United (SMU), a local youth soccer program that remained in existence for 5 years. The program amassed a total of over 880 youth soccer players for recreational and competitive play. While helping run the program, he also coached several recreational and competitive (division 1 and 2) travel teams over his tenure with SMU. After the program had ended, many players went on to play division 1 soccer for some of the top clubs in Miami and represented some of the top soccer schools in Miami. While at Cushman, Coach H co-founded and organized the Cushman Athletic Development (CAD) Program which has been in affect for six years now. Coach H, with the help of others, has successfully created a learning platform for children to develop their skills in team sports such as soccer, volleyball, baseball and basketball. Coach H also co-founded what is now known as Cushman’s Blue and White Day, which has been a tremendously successful program instilling pride to students, teachers and parents through games and physical activity. Over the last decade at Cushman, Coach H has coached basketball, baseball and soccer. Currently, he is Head Coach of boys soccer.
Cross Country Coach
With over 36 years of competitive experience and 20 years coaching, Marcelo begins his first year at Cushman as the cross country coach. His competitive athletic career began in 1981 when he specialized in running 5K & 10K distance races. Soon thereafter, Marcelo started competing in spring triathlons. He was fortunate to have trained by the best of the best in Brazil, Professor Wanderlei de Oliveira, the famous “guru” of track & field and road racing. Wanderlei de Oliveira worked with European Olympic level runners and world record champions from Portugal in the 80’s. In this training environment, Marcelo was surrounded by Olympic and National level athletes for over 10 years. After years of competition, he decided that his desire to help others exceeded his desire to compete, and he began coaching full-time. In 1998, Marcelo became part of the 1st group of USAT Certified Coaches. Most recently in 2016, he became an Ironman U certified coach. Now, Marcelo brings his expertise to the Cushman family.
High School Athletic Director
Brett Rossi has been at Cushman for eight years and has been involved with Cushman athletics since his inaugural year. Rossi started at Cushman after attending Barry University for four years as well as being a member of the baseball team in the sunshine state conference. After playing at Barry University, he continued his involvement there with coaching the baseball team for four years as an assistant coach while earning his Master’s degree in sport management. Since getting his Masters, Brett has coached at Cushman as well as other programs throughout the years. Rossi is currently the High School Athletic Director at the new high school campus. He is excited to be a part of a family of team members where the culture is to embrace and foster quality people and student athletes.
JV Boys Basketball Head Coach
Brandon begins his first season as the JV boys basketball head coach. He played basketball and graduated from North Miami Beach High School. At NMB, he earned all-county honors and was named MVP twice. He began his collegiate career at Snow College in Utah, where he was a two-year starter. As a freshman, he was named All-SWAC second team and earned All-Region honors. He averaged 9.1 points, 2.8 rebounds and 4.3 assists in 2011-12. He averaged 11.3 points and 3.1 rebounds a game as a sophomore. He led the Scenic West Athletic Conference (SWAC) in assists per game (6.4) during the 2012-2013 season. Brandon led the Scenic West Athletic Conference (SWAC) in assists per game (6.4) during the 2012-13 season. He transferred to Winthrop University in South Carolina for his junior year. He appeared in 32 games for the Eagles, averaging 13 minutes, 3.5 points, 1.5 rebounds and 1.9 assists per game. He had a season-high 13 points and nine assists against Barber-Scotia and finished third on the team with 61 assists. After his junior season, he transferred to Fairmont State University in West Virginia. In his senior season, he appeared in 33 games and made 10 starts at the point guard position. He averaged 3.2 points, 1.5 rebounds and was tied for second on the team with 69 assists. He also recorded 23 steals, averaging 15.0 minutes per game.
