Our school provides hands-on, relevant programming that effectively prepares our students for today's engagement in life and for the highly competitive, dynamic marketplace they will soon enter. We have found that partnering with the talented professionals who comprise the Cushman community and developing strategic partnerships with other businesses, allows access to impressive resources that truly make a difference in the lives of our students.
Cushman’s faculty and administration will collaborate with Florida International University’s School of Education on a variety of projects and professional development opportunities, which include: S.T. E. A. M. initiatives, field testing of an innovative math program for Primary age students, and in becoming a certified, internationally recognized Habits of Mind school under the direction of Dr. Bena Kallick, who also worked with Harvard University’s Project Zero Program.
Cushman is partnering with TD Bank to help instill financial literacy in our students through TD Bank’s Financial Education Program. Certified bank instructors will visit classrooms to teach money and banking skills through interactive games and activities. Upon completion of the classes, each student will receive a WOW! Zone Certificate as well as a $10.00 credit towards a new Young Saver Account.
Cushman’s Middle School students participate in the South Florida Science and Engineering Fair hosted by Miami Dade College each year. Cushman is a member of the SECME organization that prepares students to enter and complete in post-secondary studies in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), thus creating a diverse and globally competitive workforce. Mrs. Geimer (Middle School Director) and Mrs. Hedge (Innovation Center Director) will lead the SECME program and projects.
Cushman is the only Middle School in our vicinity that continues to teach Latin. Cushman teacher, Cindy Ley, designed this unique course offered over a two-year span. Through integrative, project-based study of ancient Greek and Roman civilizations, coupled with a focus on etymology, students learn and enjoy Latin in our everyday life. Both 7th and 8th grade students participate in the National Etymology Exam for Latin Studies every year and many consistently rank nationally.
The above programs and collaborations are just some examples of how The Cushman School continues to stay true to its founder’s (Dr. Laura Cushman) educational philosophy under the current Head of School’s leadership into the 21st century.
“I believe that a great education is one that works in partnership with the school’s families and community to develop students to their fullest intellectual, creative, social-emotional, physical and spiritual capacities...and, to truly educate and prepare children for a very different world than what we have experienced means to cultivate a specific educational foundation. This foundation must develop children’s critical thinking and synthesizing capacities, design strategies, and the ability to apply knowledge in fluid ways with an entrepreneurial mindset.” - Arvi Balseiro, Head of School
